'India lost 34 personnel, 56 military aircraft in four years'

Daily Times

NEW DELHI: India has lost 34 servicemen in 56 military aircraft crashes over the past four years, Defence Minister AK Antony told Lok Sabha on Monday. Of the 56 crashes, 37 involved aircraft and 19 involved helicopters. According to APP, civil property worth around Rs 0.63 million was also destroyed in the accidents. "The major reasons for aircraft accidents in the defence forces are human errors and technical defects," Antony said.

"In each case, an investigation is carried out and appropriate remedial actions are taken. Besides, a continuous and multi-faceted effort is always underway to enhance and upgrade flight safety measures," the Minister said. "Measures to enhance the quality of training to improve skill levels, ability to exercise sound judgment and situational awareness of pilots are being pursued. Constant interaction with original equipment manufacturers, both indigenous and foreign, is also maintained to overcome the technical defects of aircraft," Antony said. Five Indian military aircraft and one helicopter have crashed since January 2009. In the latest accident, 13 army and air force personnel were killed when an Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft crashed in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.
